A criminal case involving an owner and two agents of a Modesto bail bond business remains stalled as the court looks for a defense attorney without any conflicts of interest.
Aleo John Pontillo, owner of AJ’s Bail Bonds, and bail agent and office manager Janelle Marie Llorens are accused of handcuffing their clients and threatening them for hours at the Yosemite Boulevard business from 2006 to 2008. The other bail agent from the business, Mark David Davis, is accused of conspiring with Pontillo and Llorens to commit grand theft.
Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Scott Steffen on Thursday scheduled Pontillo to return Jan. 12 to ensure his latest court-assigned attorney has no conflicts of interest. A conflict can come from various situations, including an attorney who has represented a co-defendant or a potential witness in the case.
The defendants, who have pleaded not guilty, remain free on bail.
