The names of several Oakland homicide victims have been released by law enforcement officials, as the city continues to suffer a string of gun violence, and more murder victims are turning up.
The most recent was the Monday morning shooting death of Lonnie Turbin, 35, of Oakland in the 1300 block of 83rd Avenue at 2:15 a.m., police said.
Police took one suspect into custody in connection with the shooting that morning.
On Saturday, 30-year-old rapper Brondon McDaniel of Oakland was shot in the 400 block of 105th Avenue. McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene.
Last Friday, police discovered another homicide. An unidentified woman’s body was found in the 9800 block of C Street shortly after noon. The woman had been dead for several weeks and the body was badly decomposed, but autopsy results indicated she was shot to death. Police said there are no suspects in the killing.
Last Thursday, police found a shooting victim suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the 800 block of 26th Street at 8:42 p.m. Police said the victim, identified by the Alameda County coroner’s office as Charles Jarvis, 48, of Oakland, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earlier that morning, at 9:45 a.m., police discovered 24-year-old Anthony Torrence of Oakland suffering from a gunshot wound near the corner of 89th Avenue at D Street. Torrence died from his injuries.
On Jan. 29 shortly before 2 a.m., police responded to a party in the 1700 block of 20th Avenue. Officers found four people had been shot leaving one of them dead, police said. Coroner’s officials said 20-year-old Jordan Chhit of Vallejo was killed.
Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said last week that another victim left in critical condition was expected to recover.
Just a few minutes before that, police responded to another shooting in the 3400 block of Ettie Street. Coroner’s officials said Raymonda Hampton, 31, of Oakland had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Jan. 10, Brian Delk, 46, of Oakland became the city’s second homicide of the year when he was found in the 6100 block of Foothill Boulevard shortly before 9 p.m. Delk was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Police identified him today.
Coroner’s officials said that there have been difficulties in some cases notifying next of kin, leaving to delays in identifying homicide victims.
Watson said that in some cases the department has become so busy with protests and violent crime that releasing the information has been difficult, and that whether particular names are released depends on individual investigators in the department.
There have been 14 homicides in Oakland this year.
